The ICO fined Bupa Insurance Services Limited (Bupa) £175k under Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998, after an employee extracted details of 547k customers from their CRM system that holds 1.5m records, between January and March 2017. They were able to send the bulk data reports to their personal email address, before selling the data on the dark web.
Data included names, dates of birth, email addresses and nationality.
Bupa were alerted to the breach in June 2017, when an external partner spotted the data for sale. 198 complaints were recieved by Bupa and ICO. Sussex Police issued a warrent for the employee's arrest.
