20 September 2018
The ICO fined Equifax Limited £500k under Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998, after a cyber attack compromised the personal data of 15m UK citizens. Globally, the US hack, from May to July 2017 affected 146m people.
Due to the timing, it was not fined under GDPR/DPA'18, so this was the maximum fine available.
The ICO and UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) found 5 of the 8 data protection principles had been contravened. This included failure to secure personal data, poor retention (deletion) practices, and lack of legal basis for transferring data to US. Equifax had been warned about vulnerabilities by the US Department of Homeland Security in March 2017.
